Ancient Olynthus (Archaeological Site)

  • - Ancient Olynthos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Chalkidiki.
  • - It was designed using the Hippodamian system of cities (network of roads, squares/blocks).
  • - The houses in the city were two-story, with inner courtyards, and some had mosaic floors.
  • - Historically, it had a very strong position: it was the capital of the Chalcidice federation ("Chalcidice Community").
    - It was destroyed in 348 BC by Philip II of Macedon.
  • - There is an upgraded "Digital Information Center" (AnODIC) within the archaeological site, which offers digital presentations / 3D models, etc.
  • - There is a small museum center/presentation area on the site (or at least there used to be).
  • - The archaeological site is open (although there may be restrictions/infrastructure works).

Ancient / Traditional Arnaia

  • - Arnaia is a historic settlement built at the foot of Mount Cholomontas, at an altitude of ~600 m.
  • - It has been designated a "Historic Site" and "Traditional Settlement" by the Ministry of Culture.
  • - It features beautiful old mansions, cobbled alleys, and traditional architecture.
  • - Arnaia has a Historical and Folklore Museum, housed in an old mansion ("Yatradiko").
  • - The area has a tradition of weaving; in the museum, you will see weaving tools, woven fabrics, etc.
  • - According to records, there were prehistoric and ancient cities in the area (Arnes) - meaning that Arnaia has very deep roots.
  • - During the Ottoman occupation, it was called "Liarigova/Liarigovi," and the current name "Arnaia" was established in 1928.
  • - Today it is a very picturesque place for tourism: it offers views, a traditional environment, natural trails, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Petralona Cave

  • - The Petralona Cave is an important paleoanthropological and geological monument.
  • - The famous "Petralona Skull" was found here, which is considered one of the oldest human skulls found in Europe.
  • - The cave is very long (~2 km), has many stalactites and stalagmites, and there are pools of water inside.
  • - There is an Anthropology Museum on site that displays finds from the cave: tools, bones, reproductions, etc.
  • - The cave and museum have undergone renovations and upgrades in the past.

Archaeological Museum of Polygyros

  • - The museum displays finds from all over Chalkidiki, including ancient Olynthos.
  • - Its collection includes objects from the Early Bronze Age, classical objects, vases, jewelry, etc.
